Softball Splits PSAC West Doubleheader with Cal

ERIE, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst softball team split a pair of games with visiting Cal U Sunday afternoon at the Mercyhurst Softball Field.

The Lakers rallied for a 6-4 victory in the opener before dropping a highly competitive 1-0 decision game two.

With the opener tied 4-4 in the bottom of the sixth, Chloe McQuestion singled through the middle with one out and moved to second on a Madison Fry single to left. After a pop out, Cheyenne Hindman delivered a two-out, two-run double to right center to make it 6-4 Lakers.

Mikaela Schramski sat down the Vulcans in order in the top of the seventh to claim the complete game victory.

Cal jumped out to a 3-0 lead on a Briteny Wilson three-run homer in the top of the first.

McQuestion trimmed the lead to 3-2 with a two-run blast in the bottom of the second. In the third, Natalie Graff plated Hindman with sacrifice fly to tie the score.

The Vulcans retook the lead on an RBI single by Paige Wilson in the fourth. McQuestion again provided the answer with a game-tying solo shot to left.

McQuestion finished game one 3-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBI. Hindman recorded a pair of hits with two RBI and a run scored. Schramski struck out eight on the day.

In game two, Morgan Hilty and Kelsey Barron dueled through four scoreless innings. The Vulcans broke the tie on a Brooke Wilson RBI single in the fifth.

The Lakers put runners on first and second in the seventh inning, but couldn't push the tying run across.

Hilty surrendered just five hits over seven innings and took the hard luck loss. Anna O'Geen and Sarah Koscho each finished game two 2-for-3.

Mercyhurst moved to 12-14 in the PSAC-West and are tied for fifth. The Lakers are three games back of IUP for the fourth and final postseason spot.

The Lakers are back in action on Tuesday when they make the return trip to Cal. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m.
