Women's Tennis Earns 20th Win With Sweep Of Clarion

CLARION, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst women's tennis team took a 9-0 decision over Clarion in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division action on Saturday. The Lakers are ranked second in the Atlantic Region.

The Lakers (20-1, 5-1) jumped ahead with all three doubles points and swept singles play, clinching the match on a win by Saioa Gomez de Segura at No. 1 singles.

Adrianna Jeffress and Kayla Frost (No. 6 Atlantic doubles) got Mercyhurst started with an 8-0 win at No. 2 doubles over Vinisha Reddy and Katie Benson.

The third doubles pair of Ivona Plecevic and Athina Tsagkaraki followed with an 8-1 win against Michelle Petrilla and Hailey Germanoski before the Lakers' No. 1 doubles team of Gomez de Segura and Adina Spahalic (No. 4 Atlantic doubles) finished an 8-2 triumph versus Alivia Arnold and Maria Snyder.

In singles play, Tsagkaraki put the Lakers into a 4-0 lead with her 6-0, 6-0, win against Germanoski. That set up Gomez de Segura's deal-sealer as the 18th-ranked player in NCAA Division II -- and No. 1 in the Atlantic -- took a 6-2, 6-0, decision over Arnold.

Spahalic, Frost, Plecevic and Jeffress followed, in order, with wins at Nos. 5, 2, 4 and 3, respectively.

Spahalic bested Petrilla, 6-0, 6-0; Frost (No. 2 Atlantic singles) defeated Snyder, 6-0, 6-0; Plecevic got past Benson, 6-0, 6-0; and Jeffress (No. 3 Atlantic singles) was a winner over Reddy, 6-1, 6-0.

Gomez de Segura extended her individual win streak to 20 while Tsagkaraki claimed her 18th consecutive singles win. Singles records for each player are as follows: Gomez de Segura (34-2), Frost (25-6), Jeffress (28-4), Plecevic (24-5), Spahalic (21-3) and Tsagkaraki (21-4).
