Softball Honors Seven Seniors against Seton Hill Saturday Afternoon; Falls Twice

ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst University softball team honored seven seniors (Taylor Jezuit, Shannon Minihane, Courtney Brothers, Allison Yule, Kayla Larson, Tawny Godin, Francesca Costanzo), who played their final home game at the Mercyhurst University Softball Field Saturday afternoon. The Lakers (13-23, 5-15 PSAC-W) hosted Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division opponent Seton Hill (16-24, 9-9 PSAC-W). The Griffins swept the Lakers, defeating Mercyhurst 6-2 in game one, while, in game two, Seton Hill pulled out a 3-2 win in eight innings.

Game One | Mercyhurst 2, Seton Hill 6

Seton Hill got off to an early 2-0 lead before the Lakers pulled off the squeeze play to cut the lead in half in the bottom of the first. Godin laid down a bunt that allowed Rachel DiBartolomeo to score from third.

DiBartolomeo would, then, single through the left side, driving in Minihane the following inning, tying the game at two.

The Griffins would score the final four runs over the next five innings, while Kaitlyn Kutchman held the Lakers scoreless.

Lakers' starting pitcher Heather Nye (L, 3-10) pitched three and one-thirds innings and received the loss. Portia McBride came in for relief, pitching the final three and two-thirds, allowing only two hits and one run.

DiBartolomeo finished the game 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Godin was 1-for-2 with an RBI.

Game Two | Mercyhurst 2, Seton Hill 3 (8 Innings)

The Griffins took a 1-0 lead in the first inning off a sacrifice fly, allowing Caitlyn Tobin to score from third.

The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fifth, when Costanzo blasted a solo homerun, her first of the season, tying the game at one.

Mercyhurst starting pitcher Carly Konopka (L, 3-4) and Kutchman (W, 11-9) held each team scoreless in the sixth and seventh innings before two Laker errors allowed Seton Hill to take a 3-1 lead in the eighth inning.

DiBartolomeo would homer with two outs in the bottom of the inning, cutting the lead to one, 3-2, but Kutchman would get Yule to ground out on the next at-bat, holding on for their 16th win of the season. For DiBartolomeo, it was her team-leading 10th homerun on the year.
