SYRACUSE, NY, - The Mercyhurst University softball team split a pair of non-conference games at Le Moyne Wednesday afternoon. The Lakers' five run sixth inning helped Mercyhurst defeat the Dolphins 9-1 in six innings, while Le Moyne came back in game two, returning the favor with an 8-1 win over the Lakers.
Game One | Mercyhurst 9, Le Moyne 1 (6 Innings)
Anna Cochis (5-4) led Mercyhurst to their 12
th victory of the season, pitching her best game of the season. The junior threw a two-hitter and only allowed one run, while the Laker offense supported her with nine runs.
Courtney Brothers got Mercyhurst on the board early, when she hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring
Cassandra Egelston. Tawney Godin followed the Brothers' RBI with one of her own, hitting a double, allowing
Rachel DiBartolomeo to score from third. The Lakers led 2-0 after one.
In the third, Brothers would drive in two more runs on a double to left center, scoring Egelston and DiBartolomeo.
After a Le Moyne run in the bottom of the fifth that cut the lead to 4-1, Mercyhurst would close out the game in the top of the sixth, scoring five runs on three hits.
Allison Yule had the big hit of the inning, parking a two-run bomb over the right field fence for her first homerun of the year. DiBartolomeo (2) and Godin (1) also drove in runs during the inning.
Cochis finished off the sixth with her fourth 1-2-3 inning of the game.
DiBartolomeo and Yule each recorded three hits in the game one win. Brothers led the team with three RBIs.
Game Two | Mercyhurst 1, Le Moyne 8
Le Moyne took a 2-0 lead in the first inning before catcher
Jamie Ward cut the lead in half in the second, hitting a ground ball to shortstop, advancing
Shannon Minihane to third, where she eventually scored on a fielding error.
The Dolphins would go on to score eight unanswered runs the next three innings, taking an 8-1into the fifth.
Le Moyne starting pitcher Eastman (W, 15-6) held the Lakers scoreless over five innings, while Mercyhurst starter Carla Konopka (L, 3-3) received the loss, pitching three innings, allowing all seven earned runs and one unearned.
Yule finished the game with a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3, while Brothers recorded her first triple of the season.
Mercyhurst will travel to Indiana (Pa.) tomorrow to resume game one in the top of the fourth inning, where the Lakers trail the Crimson Hawks, 6-4. Game time is scheduled to resume at 1:00 p.m.
