HARTSVILLE, SC – The Mercyhurst University softball team swept a doubleheader at Coker College Monday afternoon. The Lakers defeated the Cobras 9-4 in game one and 9-3 in game two.
Rachel DiBartolomeo finished 7-for-8 at the plate for the day.
Game one | Mercyhurst 9 - Coker 4With Mercyhurst trailing 2-0 after three innings of play, the Lakers' bats came alive in the fourth, posting four runs on three hits.
Julia Lang led off the top of fourth with a triple and came in to score following a wild pitch.
Cassandra Egelston, then, scored
Nicolette Tomani from third on an RBI single, before
Rachel DiBartolomeo doubled to center field, scoring Egelston. DiBartolomeo would later score from second off a wild pitch.
The Cobras pulled within one in the bottom half of the fourth, but Lang responded with two-run homerun to right field in the fifth, pulling ahead by three.
Mercyhurst would tack on three more runs in seventh, with a two-run double from
Meghan Maranto and a
Francesca Costanzo sacrifice fly to center field that scored
Taylor Jezuit.
Sophomore
Heather Nye (2-1) received the win, pitching all seven innings, allowing 12 hits, four runs and recorded one strikeout.
DiBartolomeo finished the game 4-for-4, while Lang went 3-for-4 and two RBIs. Maranto also finished with two hits and a pair of RBIs.
The Lakers finished with 15 hits, a season-high.
Game Two | Mercyhurst 9 - Coker 3After a slow start in game one, Mercyhurst got off to a hot start in game two, jumping out to an early 6-1 lead after the first two innings of play.
Senior
Allison Yule got things started for the Lakers in the first, driving in two runs on a single to center field. DiBartolomeo and Egelston scored on the play.
DiBartolomeo would follow the two-run first inning with a grand-slam in the second, opening a 6-0 lead. It was her second homerun of the season.
Coker would cut the lead in half, 6-3, in the third inning, before Mercyhurst put the game away with one run in the fifth and two in the sixth.
It was DiBartolomeo who recorded her fifth RBI of the game, sixth of the day, in the sixth inning, when she roped a double to right field, scoring Jezuit.
Courtney Brothers would, then, reach on an error that scored DiBartolomeo to end the scoring.
Carly Konopka (1-0) received the win, pitching three innings, allowing three runs on six hits and struck out three, while
Portia McBride came in for relief. McBride pitched four innings, allowing only two hits and struck out four batters.
Mercyhurst will travel to Florence, South Carolina tomorrow for a doubleheader at Francis Marion (22-12. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
