SAN BERNARDINO, Cal. – The Mercyhurst University softball team dropped both games in a doubleheader at California State San Bernardino Saturday afternoon. The Lakers lost a 10-5 decision in game one and fell to the Coyotes 12-7 in game two.
San Bernardino showed off their power early in game one, blasting two solo homeruns in the second inning to jump out to an early lead. The Lakers would respond in the top half of the third when third basemen Megan Maranto put a ball over the centerfield wall, to cut the Coyotes lead in half, 2-1.
The Coyotes would tack on another three runs in the fourth and fifth inning to pull ahead 8-1, before Mercyhurst would post four runs in the top of the sixth to make it 8-5.
Allison Yule recorded a sacrifice fly, while
Courtney Brothers hit a three-run homerun to centerfield, scoring
Cassandra Egelston and
Emily Hair. San Bernardino would close the scoring with their third homerun of the game in the bottom half of the sixth.
Portia McBride received the loss in game.
Game two featured two big three-run homeruns from
Anna Cochise in the fourth inning and Brothers --her second of the day -- in the fifth inning, that put Mercyhurst ahead, 7-6.
The Coyotes would answer the Mercyhurst rally with a six-run sixth inning, to regain the lead, 12-7. The Lakers would end the game going 1-2-3 in order in the top of the seventh.
Cochis received the loss on the mound in game two.
Mercyhurst will be back in action on February 12 when they participate in the Lenoir-Rhyne Bear Bash Tournament. The Lakers will play Concord University at 11:00 a.m., followed by the host, Lenoir-Rhyne, at 1:00 p.m.
