MYRTLE BEACH, SC -
Game one: In the first of three games Saturday in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, the Lakers fell to Glenville State, 7-6, while the Pioneers scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth.
After
Taylor Jezuit reached third on an error,
Annie Truelove blasted an opposite field homerun, her first homerun of the season, giving the Lakers a 2-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth.
Two sacrifice flies in the bottom of the fourth tied the game at two before an hour rain delay postponed play.
When play resumed, Cassandra Egleston moved
Shannon Minihane over after she reached on a bunt.
Becky Malaga would follow with an RBI single that scored Minihane to give the Lakers the lead again, 3-2, heading into the bottom of the fifth.
Truelove snagged a line drive right back at her to end the bottom of the fifth inning with Mercyhurst still ahead, 3-2.
In the top half of the inning, Truelove would hit an RBI single to score
Kayla Larson. Jezuit would also score in the inning off of RBI single by Egleston. Lakers were in control 5-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth.
A big sixth inning for Glenville would put the Lakers behind, as the Pioneers scored five runs to take a 7-5 lead.
Mercyhurst would threaten with their last at bats but would only get one across the plate.
Truelove received the loss on the mound, bringing her record to 3-4 on the year.
Game two: In game two,
Allison Yule hit a double in the top of the first and advanced to third. However, the Hilltoppers would escape the inning allowing no runs.
In the bottom of the first with West Liberty holding runners on base, the Mercyhurst defense turned a 6-3-5 double-play to end the inning.
West Liberty would get on the board first in the bottom of the third on an RBI single. A Base hit by
Rachel DiBartolomeo scored
Courtney Brothers to knot the game at one heading into the bottom of the fourth.
The Lakers would threaten again in the top of the fifth. Starting pitcher
Alexandra Puckly lead off the inning with a double. Meghan Moranto advanced Puckly to third on a sacrifice bunt but was stranded, keeping the ballgame tied at one.
Mercyhurst would eventually take the lead, when DiBartolomeo hit an inside the park homerun to put the Lakers up, 2-1. It was her second homerun of the season, as Mercyhurst held on to win by a final of 2-1.
Puckly picked up the win, improving her record to 3-3.
Game three: Entering the final game of the day against West Virginia State, the Yellow Jackets got on the board first, scoring on a passed ball. Egleston would pick off the runner to bring Lakers to the plate.
Brothers started the bottom of the first with a triple, but no one was able to bring her around to score, as the Yellow Jackets hung on to the 1-0 lead.
A 6-6-3 double play by Jezuit in the top of the second held the Laker deficit to one with Mercyhurst coming back to bat. A single by Jezuit turned into her ending up on third due to West Virginia State miscues. The Lakers would take advantage, as Truelove would bring Jezuit around to score with an RBI single to tie the game at one.
Action picked back up in the bottom of the fifth with Yule lining up the middle to begin the inning. A sac bunt by brothers put Yule on second, followed by a DiBartolomeo walk. Larson connected on a hit to right to load the bases, as Jezuit would draw a walk to break the tie. Mercyhurst would take a 2-1 advantage on Jezuit's second RBI of the game.
After another brief rain delay, a throwing error allowed a run to score and tie the game in the top of the sixth, 2-2. The Yellow Jackets would tack on two more runs to take the lead, 4-2, before Puckly came in for relief work and got the Lakers out of the inning.
However, Mercyhurst was unable to produce a run in the sixth and seventh, eventually falling to West Virginia State, 4-2.
Truelove received the loss, bringing her record to 3-5.
Mercyhurst ends the day 6-9 on the season and looks to return home to begin Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play on Tuesday, March 17. The Lakers will play host to Indiana (Pa.) for a doubleheader that is set to begin at 2:30 p.m.
