OMAHA, Neb.  -- At the 2010 NCAA II Wrestling National Championships, Upper Iowa's Travis Eggers knocked off top-rated and defending national champion Josh Shields of Mercyhurst College to claim the 165 lb. title.

Eggers, who finished second a year ago in the 157 lb. weight class, exploded for a quick takedown followed by three nearfall points in the opening minute of the match to build his lead.  

Shields countered with an escape point as the opening frame expired but could not mount a comeback for the come-from-behind win.

Prior to the setback, Shields had not lost a match to a Division II opponent the entire season and won 21 consecutive matches.  The three-time All-America selection closes out the 2009-10 season with a personal best record of 37-4.

His victories total is tied for the second-best in single-season history while his career record of 89-17 ranks seventh on the Lakers' all-time list.

With his runner-up showing, Shields is now just one of four wrestlers who have earned All-America status on three different occasions.

In 2009, Shields made history as the Lakers' first individual national champion when he defeated Aaron Denson of Nebraska-Omaha by a 5-0 count.

The Lakers' only other national qualifier, Andy Lamancusa, rebounded to win five straight matches and capture his second consecutive third-place finish.  A senior, Lamancusa closed out his career with as the Lakers' all-time victories leader with a 119-45 mark and broke his own record for single-season wins with a 39-10 record.   He also was a three-time All-American.
