BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Mercyhurst College softball team opened its Spring Break week in Florida with a pair of setbacks at Lynn University Monday, Feb. 22. The Fighting Knights defeated the Lakers 3-0 in the first game, and held off a Mercyhurst rally for a 4-3 victory in the second contest of the double-header.
Lynn has now won eight games in a row, and is now 10-2 on the season. The Lakers hold a 1-2 record following Monday's results.
Jen Bower hit her second home run of the season in the second game of the double-header, while
Emily Redig recorded two hits on the afternoon.
Mercyhurst managed just one hit in the first game, with Redig singling in the fifth inning to break up the no-hitter. The Fighting Knights scored one run in each of the first three innings, and pitcher Cristie Kauffman fashioned a one-hitter. Janoske gave up three runs, two earned in six innings pitched.
During the second game, the Lakers registered two hits, both in the final inning, while Lynn scored four runs on five hits.
The Lakers fell behind 4-0 after Lynn scored three unearned runs in the fifth inning and added one tally in the sixth.
In the top of the seventh inning the Lakers rallied for three runs, as a home run by Bower plated
Elizabeth Maier and
Michelle Schmitz. Redig singled, but was stranded on third with two outs, and the Fighting Knights claimed the 4-3 victory.
Kristi Janoske suffered the loss in game two, yielding three unearned runs on three hits in four and a third innings.
Megan Hopton finished the game, giving up one run on two hits.
The Lakers next play at No. 15 Nova Southeastern Tuesday, Feb. 23, with the first game of the twinbill starting at 5 p.m. NSU is 8-4 this season, and most recently defeated Saint Leo, 4-1 on Feb. 21.
