Owens, a redshirt-freshman running back, had 16 carries for 133 yards and two touchdowns during the Lakers' 25-20 comeback win over East Stroudsburg on Saturday. Owens' fourth-quarter alone eclipsed the century mark: he had 13 runs for 120 yards and both of his scores.
The first Owens touchdown run was a 53-yard trip to paydirt, closing Mercyhurst's deficit to 13-12 after the Lakers had trailed 13-0 at halftime.
After Mercyhurst pulled ahead and then made a key defensive stand, Owens was called upon for seven runs for 46 yards, including a five-yard TD run to help push Mercyhurst's lead to 25-13.
ESU closed its deficit to 25-20 with 2:55 remaining in the contest, setting the stage for an onside kick which Mercyhurst recovered. After that, Owens had four more carries for 21 yards and two first downs, pushing Mercyhurst to the point of three consecutive kneeldowns and its first win of the 2017 campaign.
Owens was named PSAC West Offensive Player of the Week for his efforts.
