ERIE, Pa. – Led by a seven-point performance from junior Jesse Scanzano, the Mercyhurst College women's hockey team gave the home crowd a preview of the 2009-10 season in a 10-0 exhibition victory over Vaughan Friday evening at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.

The Lakers saw eight players combine for 25 points in the preseason tune-up. Scanzano led the pack with two goals and five assists, followed by sophomore Jess Jones with two goals and four assists and classmate Bailey Bram with two scores and three helpers. Junior Vicki Bendus also added two goals, while third-year defenseman Cassea Schols and sophomore Meghan Corbett got on the score sheet with a goal each.

Playing against a team highlighted by five former Mercyhurst players, including all-time wins leader Laura Hosier, the Lakers took their time in the first period, building a 1-0 lead on a score by Bram at the 17:10 mark.

However, that small advantage would balloon to 7-0 in the second, as the Lakers netted six goals on just 12 shots within a 12-minute span. Corbett got the offense firing at 3:31, followed by Bendus at 5:07 and back-to-back tallies from Jones at 8:35 and 10:44. Scanzano extended the lead to 7-0 when she found the back of the net twice, adding her first at 11:04 before finding it again at 14:32.

Mercyhurst finished the marathon with three goals in the third. Bendus added her second at 5:45 while, after a 12-minute scoring break, Schols and Bram closed out the contest with lamplighters at 17:45 and 19:22.

The 10 goals were the second-most in Mercyhurst preseason history. The Lakers scored 17 goals in their first-ever game against Penn State back on Oct. 9, 1999.

Sophomore Hillary Pattenden recorded the win with 11 saves over the first two periods. Freshman Stephanie Ciampa played the third with five saves. Hosier, meanwhile, stopped 34 shots. Mercyhurst finished the game with a 44-16 advantage in shots and was 2-for-4 on the power play.

The Lakers return to action on Saturday, Sept. 26, when they host Guelph at 2 p.m. in another exhibition game at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.
