GENEVA, Ohio-- The Mercyhurst women's water polo team concluded its 2017 with a win as they defeated Gannon 10-5 in the fifth-place game Saturday, April 29, in the WWPA Championship Tournament at the SPIRE Institute.

Curtis Robinette and the Lakers (7-12) battled hard and finished the second quarter on a three-goal run to hold a 6-3 advantage at the break. The Lakers'
Becky Insalaco led the team in goals with three and also had four steals.
Kensey Clinch and
Sarah Hershey each chipped in two goals and Clinch led the team in assists with three. The Lakers' goalie
Jennifer Moshinsky put up six saves and only let five sneak past her.
Gannon (6-13) drew within two in the third quarter but the Lakers responded to finish the game on another three-goal run.
Mercyhurst netted its ten goals on 30 shots while holding Gannon to 5-of-24 shooting.
Mercyhurst continues to host the WWPA Championships tomorrow, Sunday April 30, at the Western Water Polo Associations [WWPA] championship tournament continues as #2 Cal. State East Bay [12-13] will go on to play #4 Cal. State Monterey Bay [8-12] for 3rd place starting at 9:30 am at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva Ohio. The final matchup between #1 UC. San Diego [18-14] vs. #3 Sonoma State [11-18] will take place at 11:15 am EST.
