HAVERHILL, Mass. – Senior
Christine Bestland of the Mercyhurst University women's hockey team was named the College Hockey America Player of the Month announced Thursday afternoon.
Bestland, a native of Brunkild, Manitoba, scored four points in four games during the month of March for the Mercyhurst Lakers. During the CHA Tournament, Bestland tallied one assist in the 2-1 overtime loss against RIT. She then collected three points on two goals and one assist against No. 2 Cornell in the NCAA quarterfinals to advance the Lakers to their second consecutive trip to the NCAA Frozen Four.
Of her two goals, one was scored on a power-play and one deemed the game-winner to allow her team to advance in the NCAA tournament. With the three points against Cornell, the senior also propelled herself to second all-time in career scoring at Mercyhurst with 226 career points. Throughout the season, Bestland led the team in points with 54 points on 22 goals and 32 assists.
The monthly award marked her third Player of the Month honor this season and her second consecutive accolade. Bestland also was named the CHA Player of the Week six different times throughout the 2013-14 season.
