HAVERHILL, Mass. - Senior goaltender
Max Strang of the Mercyhurst University men's hockey team has been named the Atlantic Hockey Association Goaltender of the Week for his performance at Connecticut over the weekend. The announcement was made by the league office on Monday afternoon.
Strang earned the honor for the second time this season. He also picked up the award on Christmas Eve after stopping 37-of-39 shots in a 3-2 overtime win over Canisius on December 18.
A native of Gilbertsville, Pa., Strang posted his second shutout of the season, and fifth shutout of his career, in last Saturday's 5-0 victory at Connecticut. He stopped all 40 UConn shots to win his fifth game in his last six decisions. Strang turned aside nine shots in the first period, 15 in the second, and 16 in the third to preserve the shutout and to move the Lakers into a tie for second place in the standings. He improved to 8-4-0 on the year and 7-2-0 against conference opponents.
Strang also pitched a shutout back on November 2 with a 28-save performance at Sacred Heart.
He was saddled with a tough-luck loss on Friday, replacing
Jordan Tibbett midway through the second period, after the Lakers were trailing 4-0. He allowed UConn's fifth goal of the game in over 31 minutes of relief, but Mercyhurst lost the game 5-4. All told, Strang stopped 47-of-48 shots over the weekend (.979 save percentage), allowing one goal in 91:27 (0.66 goals against average).
Over his last six outings (five starts), Strang is 5-1-0 with a 1.61 goals against average and a .954 save percentage (185-of-194).
The Lakers will return home on Friday, January 25, for the second game of the season against longtime rival Canisius College. It marks the first game of the teams' home-and-home series this coming weekend. Mercyhurst won the first meeting between the two schools at the Ice Center when forward Matthew Zay scored at the 2:58 mark of overtime to give the Lakers a 3-2 victory. Faceoff from the Mercyhurst Ice Center is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. The teams will then travel to Buffalo, N.Y. for a 7:05 p.m. start on Saturday, January 26.
