WINGATE, N.C.- The top-ranked Mercyhurst men's lacrosse team won, 10-3, at Wingate (N.C.) Saturday afternoon.
Brady Heseltine led the Lakers with three goals in the 2012 season-opener.
Troy Press scored the game's first goal with 8:29 left in the first quarter, but the Lakers quickly took control.
Kyle Kallay evened the score with 5:20 to go in the opening period. Kallay then assisted on goals by
Zac Reid and Heseltine early in the second quarter.
Brian Scheetz dished out two assists, as Heseltine and
Deven Alves both scored midway through the second to put Hurst up 5-1.
In the second half, Kallay posted an unassisted goal with 10:26 to go and then Heseltine picked up the hat trick with help from Scheetz. Reid tallied his second score of the day before Wingate finally scored its second goal. David Lee and James Wells got the Bulldogs within five scores.
Matt Hummel and Scheetz each scored to put the contest away in the fourth quarter.
Heseltine scored three goals on five shots. Kallay had two goals and two assists, while Scheetz added a goal and three helpers. Reid scored twice, while Alves and Hummel each had a goal and an assist. Scheetz led Hurst with six groundballs, while
Mitch McAvoy won 7-12 faceoffs and
Kyle Lindsay went 5-5 on his faceoff efforts.
Michael Grace made nine saves in his debut as the Lakers' goalkeeper.
Hurst will host Chestnut Hill in the home opener on Saturday, March 3, at Tullio Field. The match is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
