ERIE, Pa. - Freshmen Caroline Luczak and Shelby Bram scored first period power play goals as the Mercyhurst College women's hockey team wound up the exhibition portion of its season with a 5-1 win over the visiting Toronto Junior Aeros. The Lakers concluded pre-season play with a 3-0 mark and outscored the opposition a combined 21-3.

Luczak began a four-point game with a power play marker just 1:27 into the contest. The goal was assisted by Bram and senior Kelley Steadman and came just four seconds after a Toronto infraction. Bram's goal came roughly eleven minutes later and it, too, came just four ticks following a Toronto penalty. Senior forward Jess Jones and Luczak assisted. Those were the lone goals of the period as the Lakers outshot the Junior Aeros 22-1 in the first twenty minutes.

Mercyhurst stretched its lead to 4-0 after forty minutes as sophomore forward Christine Bestland and Steadman found the back of the net in the middle stanza. Toronto outshot the Lakers 12-10 in the second period. Luczak and Steadman assisted on Bestland's goal, while Bestland and Luczak assisted on Steadman's tally 1:47 later.

Toronto scored its only goal at 7:42 of the third as forward Kryshanda Green beat Mercyhurst senior goalie Hillary Pattenden just two seconds following a Toronto power play. Mercyhurst ended the scoring when sophomore winger Christie Cicero tallied at 15:41. Toronto outshot the Lakers 13-8 in the last period but Mercyhurst owned a 40-26 advantage for the game. Mercyhurst finished 2-of-4 with the skater advantage while Toronto finished 0-of-6.

Bram and Steadman finished with three points apiece while Bestland had two.

Senior forward Bailey Bram missed her second straight exhibition game as while trying out for the Canadian National Team.

Pattenden played the entire game in goal, stopping 25-of-26 Toronto shots for the Lakers who await the arrival of Quinnipiac next weekend. The Bobcats, ranked ninth in the first USCHO.com poll, and Lakers, ranked eighth, open the regular season Friday night, September 30 at 7 p.m. before concluding the weekend set on Saturday, October 1 at 4 p.m. The games are part of Mercyhurst's Homecoming Weekend.
