Lakers Blank Stoney Creek 6-0 In Exhibition Contest

ERIE, Pa. - Mercyhurst scored four goals within a five-and-a-half minute span late in the second period to break open a tight game and defeat Stoney Brook 6-0 in a Saturday exhibition contest. It was Mercyhurst's second successive pre-season win.

Mercyhurst scored the lone goal in the first twenty minutes when senior assistant captain Kelley Steadman scored a little more than five minutes into the period. Sophomore forward Christine Bestland assisted. The Lakers outshot the Junior Sabres 17-5 in the first frame.

With the score still 1-0 midway in the middle period, Stoney Creek changed netminders as Kasia Henley replaced starter Elanie Chuli between the pipes. Four minutes later, the Lakers began their four-goal explosion to push their advantage to 5-0 after forty minutes. Bestland scored on the power play at 14:27, while sophomore winger Christie Cicero, senior assistant captain Jess Jones, and freshman defender Caroline Luczak added lamplighters at 15:37, 16:16, and 19:58 respectively. Luczak's goal came with the Lakers up a skater. Mercyhurst owned a 25-6 shot advantage in the second period.

Mercyhurst freshman forward Kristine Grenier notched the lone goal of the third period, that coming on another power play at 5:54. The Lakers owned a 12-1 shot advantage in the third and outdistanced Stoney Creek 54-12 over 60 minutes. Mercyhurst finished 3 of 7 with the skater advantage while Stoney Creek wound up 0 for 7.

For the second straight game, all three Mercyhurst goaltenders saw action. Senior Hillary Pattenden played the first period, junior Stephanie Ciampa the second, and freshman Amanda Makela brought down the curtain.

The Lakers got goals from six different players. Bestland finished with five points (1g, 4a). Bram had three assists while Steadman and Luczak chipped in with a goal and an assist apiece.

Before the game, the Mercyhurst returning players received their 2011 College Hockey America (CHA) championship rings.

Senior forward Bailey Bram missed this afternoon's game against Stoney Creek. Bram is in Calgary, Alberta trying out for the Canadian National Team. She will miss tomorrow's action as well.

The Lakers will host another exhibition game tomorrow, Sunday, Sept 25 at 12 p.m. when the Toronto Aeros come to the Ice Center. Mercyhurst begins regular season play when it entertains Quinnipiac next Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. and 4 p.m. respectively. The games will be part of Homecoming Weekend.
