ERIE, Pa. – Senior captain
Meghan Agosta of the fifth-ranked Mercyhurst College women's hockey team was honored as the area's top collegiate athlete at the 47th Annual Erie Charity Sports Banquet, held Wednesday evening at the Bel-Aire Clarion Hotel and Conference Center in Erie, Pa.
In front of a packed house, Agosta received the honor along with McDowell's Colin Kimball, son of Mercyhurst Director of Athletics
Joe Kimball, who was recognized as Erie's top high school athlete.
Several current and former professional athletes spoke at the event, which raised money through donations and an auction for the Kanzius Cancer Research Foundation.
Vince Papale, most known for his path to the National Football League portrayed in the motion picture “Invincable”, gave the keynote speech. Others who spoke included current Cleveland Browns players Benjamin Watson, Chancey Stuckey and Joe Haden, Arizona Cardinals running back LaRod Howling, San Francisco 49ers tight end and local product Nate Byham, and former Notre Dame standout Reggie Brooks.
A two-time gold medalist and three-time All-American, Agosta has taken Mercyhurst women's hockey to new heights since arriving in Erie. The Ruthven, Ontario native has led the Lakers to a combined 115-21-6 record while ranking first in the country in scoring in two of her first three seasons. She has been named the conference's player of the year three times, and has been recognized as a three-time Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award Top-Three Finalist.
Two weeks ago she became the NCAA's all-time leading scorer, breaking former Harvard forward and current U.S. Olympian Julie Chu's record of 285 points. She currently has 294 points made up of 150 goals and 144 assists, needing only one score to break the all-time goals record held by Nicole Corriero of Harvard.
Mercyhurst closes out the regular season on Friday, Feb. 25 when it hosts College Hockey America foe Robert Morris at 7 p.m. at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.
