Women's Hockey Up One Spot To #6 In Latest USCHO.com Poll

The Mercyhurst women's hockey team moved up to #6 in the USCHO.com Poll announced Monday.
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The Mercyhurst women's hockey team continues its climb up the Division I USCHO.com Poll, moving up one more spot to #6 according to the latest rankings released on Monday afternoon. Ranked as low as tenth just a couple of weeks ago, the Lakers have rattled off nine straight victories, including two this past Tuesday and Wednesday against St. Lawrence by the scores of 5-3 and 4-1.

After starting the season 1-2, Mercyhurst has won nine straight games to move to 10-2 overall on the season, setting up a weekend showdown with third-ranked Cornell this Friday and Saturday, December 2 and 3. Cornell is 9-1-0 overall on the season. These next two weeks could potentially make or break the season for the Lakers. After hosting third-ranked Cornell this Friday and Saturday, Mercyhurst will travel to fourth-ranked Boston College next Friday and Saturday for a pair of games.

Mercyhurst is 10-2-1 lifetime against the Big Red, but Cornell has won two of the last three meetings, including a 3-2 overtime stunner in the NCAA Semifinals in Minneapolis two seasons ago. The Lakers are 4-1 against Boston College, but the two teams have not played since November 24, 2006.

Wisconsin remains the top-ranked team in the country, garnering all 15 first-place votes. Minnesota remains #2, with Cornell, Boston College, and North Dakota rounding out the top five.

Faceoffs between #6 Mercyhurst and #3 Cornell are scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday (December 2) and 2 p.m. on Saturday (December 3). The games against the Big Red will also be the "Pink at the Rink" weekend, with proceeds going towards breast cancer research.
