Agosta Named a Finalist for Sportswoman of the Year Award

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. - Mercyhurst College women's hockey senior forward Meghan Agosta has been named a finalist for the Women's Sports Foundation's 2010 Sportswoman of the Year Team Award. The team award is given to the top female athlete who demonstrated exceptional play in helping her team win a championship over a 12-month span.

Agosta joins nine other nominees vying for one of the top honors in women's sports including Betsey Armstrong (Water Polo, USA Water Polo), Jennie Finch (Softball, Team USA), Larissa Franca and Juliana Felisberta Silva (Beach Volleyball, Brazil), Megan Hodge (Volleyball, Penn State), Kaillie Humphries and Heather Moyse (Bobsled, Canada), Caitlyn McFadden (Lacrosse, Maryland), Katie O'Donnell (Field Hockey, Maryland), Diana Taurasi (Basketball, Phoenix Mercury – WNBA), and Marta Vieira da Silva (Soccer, Brazil).

Earlier this year, Agosta won her second gold medal with the Canadian National Women's Hockey Team at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. In just five games, the Ruthven, Ontario native scored a record-setting nine goals and totaled 15 points to earn the tournament's most valuable player and top forward awards.

In addition to the team award, the Women's Sports Foundation also has a Top Individual Award, which can be voted on at the same link.

Both winners will be announced on Tuesday, Oct. 12 at the Annual Salute to Women in Sports at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City.
