VANCOUVER - Mercyhurst College women's hockey forward
Meghan Agosta scored three goals and added two assists as the Canadian National Women's Hockey Team opened the preliminary round of the 2010 Winter Olympics with an 18-0 win over Slovakia Saturday evening.
Agosta, a three-time All-American at Mercyhurst, helped the Canadians set a new Olympic record for goals in a game, surpassing their previous mark of 16 set in a 16-0 romp of Italy at the 2006 games.
Canada outshot Slovakia 67-9 and held leads of 7-0 after the first period and 13-0 after the second.
All but one player on Canada's roster - Meaghan Mikkelson – tallied a point. Caroline Ouellette tied an Olympic record with six points in the game, while Agosta and Jayna Hefford netted five apiece.
Canada continues preliminary round play on Monday, Feb. 15 with a game against Switzerland at the UBC Thunderbird Arena. Fans can watch the game live on MSNBC at 5:30 p.m. EST.
