Women's Tennis Earns Pair Of Road Victories

Caroline Bristol had a strong weekend in leading the Lakers to a pair of road wins.
ELKINS, W. Va. / GREENBRIER, W. Va. - The Mercyhurst University women's tennis team saw its winning streak hit five after disposing of Davis & Elkins and Bluefield State in the state of West Virginia over the weekend. The Lakers improved to 8-2 overall on the season.

Against the Senators on Saturday, the Lakers swept the day and defeated the hosts by an 8-0 final. The teams decided not to play the #1 singles match between Mercyhurst's Caroline Bristol and Davis & Elkins' Juila Hoehn.

The Lakers swept all three doubles matches with relative ease, with the team of Bristol and Sarah Baich working the least after earning an 8-2 victory over Hoehn and Natela Portshidze.

In singles action, all five Lakers won in straight sets. Annie Baich lost just one game in defeating Jala Hamada, 6-2, 6-0. Courtney Thompson and Taylor Wedlake lost just two games in each of their victories. Thompson won 6-2, 6-0 while Wedlake won 6-1, 6-1.

Mercyhurst only lost one match on Sunday in a 6-1 win over Bluefield State to pick up its fifth straight victory.

Bristol and Sarah Baich earned an 8-1 victory at #1 doubles to start the morning and then Thompson and Annie Baich followed with an 8-3 victory. The only hiccup occurred at #3 doubles when Katelyn Caniford and Wedlake dropped an 8-6 decision.

The Lakers won each of the first four singles matches with the #5 and #6 contests not finished. Thompson did not lose a game in her straight sets victory at #2.

Mercyhurst returns to action on Tuesday, March 11 when it hosts Roberts Wesleyan at the Pennbriar Athletic Club.
