ANN ARBOR, Mich.- The Mercyhurst women's water polo team won two of three matches Saturday at the Wolverine Invitational Saturday. The Lakers beat Gannon, 7-4, and Salem International, 8-1, after falling, 11-3, to Concordia (Calif.).
Hurst played its local rival in a primetime showdown and came out with a victory. The teams were tied after one period, but the Lakers exploded for four goals to take a 5-3 halftime edge. They added another goal in the third quarter and held on for a three-goal win.
Lisett Calderon and
Kimberly Goodhart each scored three goals.
Hope Rozelle made 14 saves in net and
Allie Grimes added a goal.
Against Salem, Mercyhurst jumped out to a 6-0 lead after one frame and rolled from there.
Trish Armstrong recorded a hat trick, while Grimes scored twice.
Monique Pentecost,
Ali Iaquinto, and
Kassandra Kruesi each scored a goal. Rozelle posted eight saves.
Hurst opened the day against Concordia. It fell behind 1-0 after one and 6-1 at the half. Calderon scored all three goals for the Lakers. Rozelle totaled 11 saves in net.
Coach
Curtis Robinette's squad improved to 5-8 on the season. It continues action in Ann Arbor with two games on Sunday. The Lakers take on California Lutheran and Michigan on March 18.
