Stephen Albert was a member of the inaugural Mercyhurst men's basketball team as he competed for the Lakers from 1971 until 1975. In just the second year of the program – Albert's sophomore year – Mercyhurst qualified for the NAIA National Tournament. That season, the 6-foot-6 post-player Albert was recognized as an NAIA Honorable Mention All-American.
A native of Pittsburgh, Pa., and product of South Hills Catholic High School, Albert's collegiate career took a turn for the worse during his junior year when he suffered an ankle injury during the preseason. He struggled through that campaign and – after offseason surgery – returned to the court for his senior year.
Despite that injury-affected junior year, Albert is still ranked sixth all-time on the Mercyhurst career list for rebounds. He is also 14th in field goals and tied for 19th in points.
