After graduating, he served as an assistant baseball coach at Penn State Behrend from 1981-1983 before taking over as head coach in 1984.

Mike spent the next 16 years of his life as either the head athletic trainer or equipment manager for a number of professional sports teams. He began by working as an athletic trainer for the Pittsburgh Pirates and Chicago Cubs affiliates in the Midwest and Appalachian leagues.

From there, Mike began a lengthy career in the NHL. He began as head medical trainer for the St. Louis Blues for five years. Mike then worked as the head medical trainer for the Indianapolis Ice, the Chicago Blackhawks' affiliate of the International Hockey League. Later that year, Mike returned to the NHL as head equipment manager for the New York Rangers.
