The 2000-01 Mercyhurst Men's Hockey team became the first team in school history to reach an NCAA Division I Tournament, earning an automatic bid after winning the 2001 MAAC Hockey League regular season and Tournament Championship. Mercyhurst was the first team from the conference to receive the automatic bid to the tournament after knocking off Quinnipiac 6-5 in the conference championship.

The team finished the season with a 22-12-2 overall record and a 19-6-1 conference record, and played Michigan in the first round of the NCAA West Regional, losing an epic battle against the Wolverines by a 4-3 final. Mercyhurst's former assistant coach, Peter Aubry, was named to the All-Region team after stopping 47 shots against Michigan.
