Martin Sturgess was a member of the Mercyhurst Men's Tennis team from 1973-76 and put together one of the best individual careers in the program's history. Sturgess was co-captain of the 1976 NAIA National Championship team. He won the NAIA doubles championship and was a singles quarterfinalist in 1976.
In 1975, Sturgess was a NAIA singles semifinalist. He was named to the NAIA All-American squad for 1975 (singles), and 1976 (singles and doubles). Sturgess was the Pennsylvania State College Champion in 1973, 1974, and 1975. He was also an NAIA District 18 Champion 1973-1975.
