Joe Hepfinger has been associated with the Mercyhurst athletic department in some capacity since 1971, helping with the baseball program when it first began. He has been a fixture on campus and is generally recognized as the Lakers' number one fan. He has served a number of capacities within the department, helping with field and facility maintenance in the early stages of his tenure. According to a quote from former Mercyhurst baseball coach Mike Cusack, “Joe is my right-hand man, and without him, the Laker Baseball program just would not be the same.” Affectionately known as “Joe Hep,” Hepfinger still attends nearly every home sporting event, rain or shine, and helps the department in any way that he can.
