Jim Sturm was a member of the inaugural Mercyhurst football team as he competed for the Lakers from 1981 until 1984. A native of Erie and graduate of Cathedral Prep, Sturm roamed the defensive backfield as a free safety for the Lakers.

The 6-foot, 175-pound defensive back is ranked second all-time in Mercyhurst history in career interceptions. He held the record until it was broken in 2014. Sturm was the team leader in interceptions during the 1983 and 1984 seasons. He started every game during his collegiate career and is currently tied for 44th in total tackles.

Sturm, a member of the now-defunct Mercyhurst Football Hall of Fame, received several honors after his senior season, in which the Lakers enjoyed an 8-1 record. He was named a Third-Team All-American by the Football Gazette and, for his efforts in the classroom, was named to the Academic All-District Team.
