Former Mercyhurst College golf coach and administrator Jean Forsyth, who died in 1999 at the age of 74, was inducted into the Mercyhurst College Athletic Hall of Fame Saturday, May 22, 2004, during the Athletic Department's annual Senior Student Athlete Recognition Luncheon at the college's Egan Hall Dining Room.
Forsyth left an indelible mark on Mercyhurst College and the Erie community. She started playing golf at 12 and eventually put together a record 11 EDWGA tournament wins in 21 years and captured the Lawrence Park Golf Club championship 20 times and Senior Club Championship eight times. Over the years, Jean taught the game to adults and youngsters of all ages.
She worked as a physical educator at Mercyhurst College from 1967 through 1972 and served as the golf coach from 1970 to 1972. Jean was instrumental in developing the golf program, one of the first sports here at Mercyhurst when the college went co-educational in 1969.
She went to Lawrence Park High School and later earned a degree in Health and Physical Education from Slippery Rock in 1946.
She scored three holes-in-one during her career and was involved in some great rivalries on the local scene, including those against Kay Hebert, who was inducted into the Mercyhurst Athletic Hall of Fame in 1997.
Forsyth was inducted into the Erie District Golf Hall of Fame in 1983 and into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 1988.
