Ravinder Sabherwal, an Erie native, started playing competitive tennis at the age of 14 under the coaching of Bob Sturm, who retired recently as an associate professor of sociology at Mercyhurst College, and Dennis Ranalli, now a Vice-President with Merrill Lynch in Erie. After a marvelous four-year career at Mercyhurst prep, Ravinder enrolled at Mercyhurst College and played at the number one position for the men's tennis team from 1979 to 1982. His most-prized accomplishments during his college years include the following:
- NAIA Academic All-American honors from 1978 to 1981
- 1980-81 NCAA Division II Easter Region title. He won the Rolex ITCA Championship and represented the Eastern Region in the NCAA Division II National Tournament.
- Named a 1981 NCAA Division II All-American with a quarterfinal finish in the nationals.
- A 1980's Erie Athlete of the Decade standing
Ravinder graduated from Mercyhurst in 1982 with Dean's List recognition, a 3.27 QPA, and a degree in Biology. In 1986, Ravinder earned a Degree of Optometry from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry in Philadelphia. He is currently enjoying a very successful private practice in Erie.
