Scarsella, a 1985 graduate, was a member of the first-ever Lakers football team in 1981. Dave was one of six players to start every game during his four-year tenure. Playing until 1984, Dave earned major awards over the course of his time at Mercyhurst, including being named to the All-District First Team, the Pizza Hut All-American Team, the National Strength Coaches All-American First Team, and an All-American Third Team. On top of that, Dave signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1985, becoming the first four-year Mercyhurst player to do so. Scarsella proved to be one of the top tacklers in Mercyhurst history, with 248 career tackles, placing him in the top 25 all-time. 26 of his tackles were for a loss, and 13 were for a sack, ranking him in the top 20 in Mercyhurst history.
