Charlie Wertz is regarded as one of the best offensive linemen in Mercyhurst history. During his four years on the field, he played center for the Lakers. The center is typically the captain of the offensive line, so Charlie fulfilled this role as he provided leadership both on and off the field mentoring younger players on the team.
He was a First Team All-American offensive lineman. In 1988, he was named an All-District player and named to two difference All-American teams. Charlie graduated from Mercyhurst in 1990 with his degree in Business Marketing.
Once his playing days were over, he joined the Mercyhurst coaching staff as a student assistant coach and continued to be a mentor for younger players while working with the interior lineman. Charlie is now a branch manager at Beacon Building Products.
