Mercyhurst University Athletics

Mission Statement

Mercyhurst University is a fully accredited, four-year, Catholic comprehensive institution, founded in Erie, Pa., by the Sisters of Mercy in 1926. The Erie campus, located on a picturesque hillside crowning the city, offers 50 undergraduate majors with 67 concentrations, as well as unique adult programs and six graduate programs. In addition, it maintains its one- and two-year programs at a campus in scenic North East, just 20 minutes from Erie. Also, in the fall of 2006, Mercyhurst opened its third campus, Mercyhurst West, in neighboring Girard, Pa.

The Mercyhurst University intercollegiate athletics program reflects an institutional commitment to excellence by offering a wide range of programs for both the serious and recreational athlete.

The University's intercollegiate athletics program is comprised of 24 varsity sports, with the Lakers fielding teams in 12 women’s sports and 12 men’s sports. Two of the programs compete at the Division I level (men’s and women’s ice hockey) while 21 participate on the Division II stage. Men’s rowing is the only varsity sport not recognized by the NCAA as a championship sport.

Mission Statement:
Through its sponsorship of athletic programs and educational opportunities for young men and women the Athletic Department of Mercyhurst University is consistent with the college’s stated vision, mission and core values.
