Mercyhurst College 2009-10 Scholar-Athlete Recognition
Mercyhurst College boasts tremendously gifted student-athletes, not only in terms of their athletic achievements but also their academic efforts. Below is a listing of academic honors garnered by Lakers in 2009-10.
NCAA Elite 88 Award - Vicki Bendus (Women's Ice Hockey)
The Elite 88, an award founded by the NCAA, recognizes the true essence of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the national championship level in his or her sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers. The Elite 88 is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA's 88 championships.
PSAC Fall Top 10 - Taylor Hilinski (Women's Soccer)
The Top Ten Awards, selected by the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference sports information directors, recognize student-athletes who distinguish themselves in the classroom, as well as in the arena of competition. The conference designates Top Ten Award winners after each of the sports seasons: fall, winter and spring. To be a candidate for the Top Ten Awards, a student-athlete must have achieved a minimum of a 3.50 cumulative grade point average (as of Fall 2009 awards) and must be a starter or key reserve with legitimate athletic credentials.
CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America Awards
To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. A student-athlete must be a first-team all-district and first-team all-region honoree in order to be placed on the national ballot.

Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Scholar-Athlete Team
To be named to the "Excellent" squad, a student-athlete must possess a cumulative grade point average of 3.71 or higher. A "Superior" squad listing requires a cumulative GPA of 3.41 - 3.7 while an "Outstanding" squad recognition features a cumulative GPA of 3.2 - 3.4.

NCAA Division II National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Academic Team
The 2009-10 Division II All-Academic Wrestling Team consists of 133 student-athletes from 32 universities and colleges. Thirty-six members were named to the first team, 33 to the second team and 64 as honorable mentions. In order to be nominated for the Division II All-Academic Team, one needs to have a minimum 3.00 cumulative grade-point average on a 4.0 scale. One must also be in at least in his second full year at his school, be a varsity member on his team or a key reserve, demonstrate a degree of skill and have a minimum of two letters of recommendation submitted on his behalf.

Intercollegiate Tennis Association
The Intercollegiate Tennis Association has named the Mercyhurst College women's tennis squad an All-Academic Team for the 11th consecutive year. The Lakers, who easily surpassed the qualifying mark of a 3.2 grade point average with a 3.7 team average GPA, also placed five on the ITA Scholar-Athlete list.
