JAMESTOWN, N.Y. – The Mercyhurst baseball team scored just four runs on seven hits and fell to the losers' bracket in the 2017 NCAA Atlantic Regional with an 8-4 loss to West Chester on Saturday, May 20 at Russell Diethrick Park.
The Lakers (38-7) now await the winner of tomorrow morning's 11 a.m. matchup between Winston-Salem State and Shippensburg. Mercyhurst is scheduled to play the winner at 2:30 p.m.
West Chester (39-11) gets a day off tomorrow and will await the loser's bracket winner on Sunday, May 22 at noon.
After a West Chester run in the second inning put Mercyhurst down early,
Drew Delsignore smacked a two-out, two-run home run to give the Lakers a 2-1 lead in the third. West Chester scored twice more in the in bottom of the fourth to pull ahead by one, but another two-out run scored by the Lakers on an error tied the game at three.
West Chester rallied to score five runs in the next three innings, chasing
Russell Lamovec in the sixth and reliever
Matthew Keating in the seventh. Meanwhile, the Lakers struggled to convert on several scoring opportunities. The Lakers ended up stranding 13 bases runners, including leaving the bases loaded twice.
Lamovec picked up his first loss of the season (7-1) after 5 2/3 innings of seven-hit, six-run pitching. His six earned runs were the most he's allowed in a start this season.
Daniel Elliott was the only Laker with a multi-hit game. He finished 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored.
The official game time was three hours and 45 minutes. Tomorrow's games were moved up to 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. from noon and 3:30 due to a forecast of rain.
