ERIE, Pa. -- Mercyhurst junior
Saioa Gomez de Segura won her second consecutive Intercollegiate Tennis Association Atlantic Region Women's Tennis singles championship and teamed with senior
Annie Baich for the ITA Atlantic doubles crown as competition at the regional event ended Monday.
Gomez de Segura outlasted Charleston's Kristine Gegeshidze in the singles championship match, 6-7 (7), 6-4, 6-2, and Luise von Agris of Indiana, Pa., in the singles semifinals, 6-0, 6-4.
By winning five matches at the regional, Gomez de Segura stretched her winning streak to 22 straight decisions dating back to the 2015-16 season. The Laker standout was seeded No. 1 in the tournament and is ranked 24th in NCAA Division II.
Sophomore
Kayla Frost had also entered the semifinals of the ITA Atlantic singles draw, but fell to Gegeshidze, 6-3, 6-1.
The Atlantic Region doubles championship was decided between two Laker duos -- and went the distance -- as Baich and Gomez de Segura defeated Frost and
Adrianna Jeffress, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5. Dating back to last year, Baich and Gomez de Segura have claimed 14 consecutive doubles decisions.
The Mercyhurst women's tennis team will return to action Sept. 30-Oct. 2 during the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Singles/Doubles Championships.
