ROTTERDAM, Netherlands – After six days of racing, the 2016 World Rowing Championships in Rotterdam have started coming to a close on the medal stand for a Mercyhurst Laker. On August 25
th, lightweight rower
Jonas Weller and his German teammates competed in the final for the Under-23 Lightweight Men's Quadruple Sculls.
Lining up against favorites Great Britain and Italy, the German boat held the lead from the outside lane for the vast majority of the 2000 meter race. In the last 500 meters of the race, Great Britain surged ahead followed closely by Germany and Italy who were tied for second. Germany captured the silver medal in the final few meters with a time of 5:54.680, hundredths of a second before Italy with a time of 5:54.740. Great Britain won the final with a time of 5:53.150.
"We are all very thrilled and excited for Jonas and for the team" said head coach
Adrian Spracklen. "It couldn't have happened to a nicer guy, and his performance in Rotterdam is an inspiration for the team waiting for him."
