Men’s Golf Places Tied for Sixth after Final Day at NCAA Atlantic/East Regional

NASHPORT, OH – Junior Blaze Hogan and sophomore's Chris Kupniewski and Ryan Mehnert led the Mercyhurst University golf team to a tie for sixth place after the final round of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Atlantic/East Regional. The Lakers' shot a personal-best for the tournament, shooting 299 during day three at the Longaberger Golf Club and finished with an overall score of 927 (319-309-299).

Although Mercyhurst made a valiant day three comeback, they fell just short of a berth to the finals May 18-22, at Rock Barn Golf & Spa in Conover, North Carolina. Wilmington (DE) took home the team title after leading yesterday. The Wildcats' won the title by five strokes, carding an 897 for the tournament, over Indiana (Pa.) who finished at 902. Charleston (903) and Le Moyne College (905) were the final two qualifying teams. St. Thomas Aquinas rounded out the top, scoring a 909.
 
Kenneth Sames of Indiana (Pa.) took home the team title, finishing the tournament two under par at 214 (70-76-68). Sam Clark of Wilmington ended just one stroke back of Sames at 215 (73-71-71).
 
The two individuals moving on to the finals are Matt Barto of Gannon University and Niklas Koerner of St. Thomas Aquinas who both tied for fifth overall at 223 and each shot a 70 on the final day. Hogan was next in line to qualify as an individualist as he tied for seventh overall with a total score of 225 (78-76-71). The Big Rapids, Michigan native shot a one under par during round three to help him move up 14 spots from day two.
 
Kupniewski also placed in the top 15, tying for 14th at 227 (81-71-75) while Mehnert had his best round of the tournament, carding a 74. The Fairport, New York native shot an overall score of 237 (86-77-74) and placed tied for 46th. Cory Vinborg (238) finished tied for 51st while freshman Jose Pena (259) tied for 100th.
