INDIANA, Pa. - The Mercyhurst University women's tennis team ended its 2014-15 season with a 5-1 loss to Indiana University of Pennsylvania on Sunday afternoon in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Championship at the Maple Street Courts. The Lakers finish the campaign with a 13-5 overall record while the Crimson Hawks advance to the Division II Championships in Sunrise, Arizona with a 19-7 overall mark.

It was the third time this season that the two schools met on the tennis courts, and, unfortunately for the Lakers, the Crimson Hawks won all three matches.

Despite the 5-1 score, the match was tightly contested throughout. IUP captured all three doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead. Senior Sarah Baich and sophomore Annie Baich suffered an 8-5 loss at #2 while freshmen Saioa Gomez de Segura and Adrianna Jeffress lost 8-4 at #1. Senior Katelyn Caniford and freshman Adina Spahalic fell short in the Lakers' attempt to avoid the doubles sweep, 8-6, at #3.

IUP's Luise Von Agris gave the hosts a 4-0 lead with a straight-set victory over Spahalic at #5 singles. But, Caniford got the Lakers on the board with the team's only victory of the afternoon - a 6-4, 6-1 win over Rachel Wood at #6.

However, the Lakers' rally attempt ended when Jeffress suffered a tight 6-4, 6-4 loss to Jarka Petercakova at #2 singles.

Mercyhurst head coach Jerome Simon and the Lakers will say goodbye to three seniors - Sarah Baich, Katelyn Caniford, and Taylor Wedlake.
