BUTLER, Pa. – Millersville's Chas McCormick hit a walkoff double in the bottom of the tenth inning to complete a stunning comeback on Friday afternoon, as the Marauders knocked off the Mercyhurst University baseball team, 7-6, in ten innings, and ended the Lakers' run in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament. Mercyhurst dropped to 34-8 on the season but, more than likely, has clinched a spot in the NCAA Atlantic Regional Tournament. The Marauders improved to 41-9 on the season and advanced to Saturday's Championship.
Mercyhurst seemingly had things in hand, leading 6-3 heading to the bottom of the ninth and junior reliever and All-PSAC First Team selection,
Ben Nolan, cruising along. But, the Marauders had other ideas.
David Summerfield led off the ninth with a double and then scored on a two-run home run by McCormick to cut the Laker lead to 6-5. Dan Stoltzfus followed with a solo blast to straightaway center to knot the game at 6-6, silencing the Laker faithful in attendance. Nolan stayed in the game and struck out John Brogan on a curve ball in the dirt. But, the ball got away from senior catcher Jake Marinelli and Brogan reached first to end the night for Nolan.
Junior
Jake Hall came in the ball game and got a groundout before intentionally walking Mitch Stoltzfus. Hall got a fielder's choice groundout to put runners at first and third and then struck out Dan Neff on three pitches to close out the frame with the game tied at 6-6.
But, in the tenth, Hall walked Summerfield with one out and then McCormick sent everyone home with a double down the right field line that scored Summerfield from first.
It was Hall's first loss of the season (0-1) while Dylan Boisclair (4-3) earned the win in relief for Millersville after pitching a scoreless top half of the tenth.
Mercyhurst struck first with three runs in the top of the second against Millersville starter, Jim McDade, to take a 3-0 lead. Senior
Giancarlo Saia led off the inning with a towering home run to right center to give the Lakers a 1-0 advantage. It was Saia's fifth home run of the campaign.
Then, after junior
Hank Morrison walked, sophomore
Cameron Balego attempted to sacrifice him to second. Balego's bunt attempt was fielded by McDade, but the throw sailed down the right field line, allowing Morrison to score and Balego to advance to third. Freshman
Daniel Elliott singled home Balego for the third run of the inning.
After the three-run second, the Laker bats, which had produced 59 hits in the first three games, went silent and Millersville began to chip away.
The rally started in the bottom of the fourth against Laker starter, junior
Matthew Jaskolka. Jeremy Musser drove home McCormick with an RBI single to cut the lead to 3-1. The Marauders would load the bases but Jaskolka was able to induce a flyout to right field off the bat of Neff to end the frame.
Millersville tied the game in the bottom of the fifth with a pair of unearned runs – one charged to Jaskolka and one charged to Nolan. Jaskolka got a groundout to start the inning and then appeared to have a second straight groundout, off the bat of Summerfield, to second. But, Balego's throw sailed high over Morrison's head at first base to put a runner on. Jaskolka's day ended after he balked Summerfield to second. Nolan entered and walked the first batter he faced before striking out Dan Stoltzfus. However, with two outs, Brogan doubled home both Summerfield and McCormick to knot the game at 3-3.
Nolan again landed in trouble in the bottom of the sixth, loading the bases with two outs. But, he got McCormick to ground into a 6-4 fielder's choice to end the frame.
The Lakers got the lead back in the top of the seventh with a pair of runs. Morrison was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Balego. Marinelli put the Lakers in front with an RBI double down the left field line, scoring Morrison from second. After a flyout by
Daniel Elliott for the second out, freshman
Collin Fantaskey singled home Marinelli for a 5-3 advantage.
Elliott drove home a run in the top of the ninth with an infield single off McDade's glove, giving the Lakers a 6-3 advantage – a run that proved to be enormous.
Redshirt senior
Ryan Siegel led off the tenth with a double to left field but was doubled off second when junior
Brendan Cox lined back to the pitcher, eliminating a Laker rally in the visitor's half and setting the stages for McCormick's heroics.
Jaskolka went 4.1 innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits. He walked one and struck out one. Nolan pitched 3.2 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits. He walked two and struck out four.
McDade went nine innings for Millersville and allowed six runs (five earned) on seven hits. He walked three and struck out three.
Mercyhurst, which had 59 hits through the first three games, ran out of gas offensively in game four. The Lakers were limited to eight hits, two by Elliott. Millersville finished with 13 hits, three each by McCormick and Summerfield.
The Lakers will learn of their NCAA Atlantic Regional fate on Sunday, May 10 at 10:00 p.m. on NCAA.com.
