INDIANAPOLIS, IN – In the third National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II Regional Rankings poll, the Mercyhurst men's basketball remains in fourth announced Wednesday afternoon. The Lakers' loss last night in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Quarterfinals to Indiana (Pa.) was not taken into account in this week's standings. All records shown exclude this week's games.
After falling to #24 IUP last night, 67-59, at home and being eliminated from the PSAC Tournament, Mercyhurst still looks to receive their first NCAA Tournament bid in program history. With an overall record at 20-8, the Lakers will have to wait until Sunday night, March 8, when the NCAA Tournament selection show announces the field of 64. NCAA Division II Selection ShowThe Lakers still trail West Liberty (25-2), Indiana (Pa.) (24-5) and Gannon (20-8). Bowie State (22-8) sits in fifth behind Mercyhurst, while Fairmont State (19-9), Slippery Rock (18-9) and Concord (20-8) round out the top eight.
Just placed outside the top eight are Charleston (WV) (17-9) and Glenville State (18-10).
Against the top eight teams in the current Atlantic Regional rankings, the Lakers are 3-5 with two wins over second ranked Indiana (Pa.). Mercyhurst dropped a pair of games to Gannon, split the season series with Slippery Rock and lost the season opener to Fairmont State. Their fifth regional loss came this Tuesday, March 3, to the hands of IUP.
The NCAA regional rankings determine the post-season participants for the NCAA Division II Tournament. Eight teams from all eight regions will qualify for the tournament to create the field of 64. Automatic berths are granted to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) and the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) champions.
