ITHACA, NY – The men's lightweight rowing program took on the lightweights from Cornell University and heavyweights from Cornell, Hobart College, and Syracuse University. Crews raced pairs and fours during the first session of racing and eights in the second session of racing. All boats raced a 3,300-meter head race followed immediately by a 330-meter sprint. Sprint times were tripled and added to the head race time to find the final time.
Heavyweight entries dominated the results, with the lightweight entries from Cornell and Mercyhurst peppered in amongst them. Cornell's Heavyweight A entry won the pair event with a total time of 15:53 (12:41 + 3x 1:03). The Lakers' A entry of
Nemanja Uzanovic and
Djordje Simovic finished in 13
th place with a total time of 16:40 (13:23 + 3x 1:05).
In the men's four Cornell's heavyweights won with a total time of 14:32 (11:30 + 3x 1:00). The Mercyhurst entry of
Ryan Baniszewski,
Harrison Kieffer,
Zackary Ghalayini,
Nemanja Matijevic, and
Anthony Delgreco finished in 11
th place with a total time of 15:35 (12:21 + 3x 1:05).
Cornell's heavyweights finished first in the men's eight event as well with a total time of 12:30 (9:51 + 3x 0:53). The Lakers finished 13
th with a total time of 13:29 (10:37 + 3x 0:57). The A-entry included
Kevin McCarthy, Kieffer, Simovic, Nick Wnek, Jonny Blazevic,
Galen Bernick, Ghalyini, Uzanovic, and
Jonas Weller. "
The team came together and found another level today matching up against the two-time defending national champions," commented Kieffer. "There is still work to be done, but the team showed that they don't shy away or crack from competition."
"Today was a good day of racing for us," said interim head coach
Jamie Francis. "Cornell's lightweights have proven to be fast and it's good for us to see where we are at the end of our fall season and consider the amount of work that needs to be done over the coming winter months before we're back on the water in the spring."
