PERRY, N.Y.-
Andrew Wagner of the #1 Mercyhurst men's lacrosse team has been named 2013 United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Outstanding Defensive Player. This is Wagner's second straight year winning the William C. Schmeisser Award.
Wagner recorded 25 ground balls and 11 caused turnovers this season. He led a Laker defense that has allowed 7.50 goals per game this year. Mercyhurst has held 16 of its 18 opponents under their season scoring average. Wagner was selected ECAC Defensive Player of the Year and All-ECAC First Team.
The Rochester, New York, native covered the opposition's top attackman throughout the season. He held Lake Erie's Keegan Bal, the ECAC Offensive Player of the Year, to no goals and an assist in the ECAC Tournament Championship. In the NCAA Tournament, Bal recorded a goal and two assists in the first quarter. Wagner then shut out the Second Team All-American for the rest of the game. Wagner also held Marty Vanzo of St. Michael's and Robert Hope of Pfeiffer to a point apiece in low-scoring Laker victories.
Corey Lunney of Merrimack earned Outstanding Player and Outstanding Attackman of the Year honors.
Wagner is the first repeat winner of the Schmeisser Award in school history. He joins
Gregory Bensman and
Brian Scheetz as the only Laker players to win a major USILA honor.
