ERIE, Pa.- The Mercyhurst field hockey team has named its captains for the 2013 season. Senior Meghan Smith and junior Katlyn Heitzhaus will be co-captains next season.
 
Smith was a team captain last season as well. In 2012, she started all 18 matches, scoring six goals and dishing out two assists. She made two defensive saves to lead the Lakers. After the season, Smith was chosen a 2012 Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA Division II Scholar of Distinction-one of 29 student-athletes on the list. Smith has recorded a 3.93 grade point average while majoring in biology.
 
Heitzhaus appeared in 11 games last year, including eight starts. She scored the game-winning goal against Seton Hill September 11. Heitzhaus was one of 12 Lakers to earn 2012 Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA Division II National Academic Squad honors.
 
The Lakers won six games last season, including a 5-3 home record. They posted three shutout victories on the year. For their 2013 schedule, please click here.
