Eight Lakers Place at Ohio Northern Tournament

Complete Bracket

ADA, Ohio – Redshirt Junior Jordan Shields led seven other Mercyhurst College placewinners as the Lakers finished third in the Ohio Northern University Tournament.  The field consisted of 16 schools which made up 45 different squads.

Shields registered two major decisions then back-to-back decision wins to complete his first tournament win of the season.  Shields beat Charles Pingleton of Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) in a thrilling 4-3 decision in his final bout.

Freshman Kody Young continued his success this season after finishing second in the 133lb bracket.  Young tallied back-to-back pins to start the tournament before a medical forfeit sent him to the championship bout.  Unfortunately Corey Brown of Thiel College edged the freshman out 3-2.  Teammate Fred Hale also took second at his weight class recording two consecutive pins in his first two matches.  The senior then marked two decision wins giving himself a chance to wrestle for first place.  J.D. Ramsey beat Hale in a 5-2 decision.

The 184lb Michael Pollard went 5-1 on the day with two consecutive pins in his first two matches.  Pollard fell short against Kevin Christman of Tiffin University who finished second overall in the tournament.

Sophomore Ryan Bohince and freshman Michael Griffith both wrestled to fifth place finishes today.   Bohince started off strong, wrestling to two tech fall wins before pinning another.  The 125-pounder lost two consecutive before earning the win in the fifth place bout.  Griffith won three bouts by decision and another by pin before earning a tech fall victory in his fifth place bout.

Jeremy Landowski took home sixth place, as he pinned his first opponent then earned a major decision in his second.  Landowski went on to win a hard fought 6-1 decision placing him in the semi-finals where he would suffer an injury loss.  174lb Pat Leahy rounded out the eight placewinners for the Lakers as he wrestled to a eighth place finish in his respective bracket.

The Lakers now turn their attention to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championship this coming Saturday, December 10.  Mercyhurst plays host for the second time in three years.
