WEST CHESTER, Pa. - Seniors
Trevor Kennedy and
Ian Wild of the Mercyhurst football team were named to the Daktronics All-Super Region 1 First Team announced on Wednesday afternoon. Kennedy was a First Team selection at both wide receiver and kick return specialist, while Wild was a First Team honoree at linebacker.
Kennedy was the top vote getter among wide receivers for the second straight season and was the only repeat First Team selection on offense. Wild, meanwhile, was also a repeat First Team selection on defense, joining Merrimack's Shawn Loiseau and New Haven's Desmond Anderson as the only repeat First Team honorees on the defensive side of the ball.
West Virginia Wesleyan quarterback Adam Neugebauer was named the region's Offensive Player of the Year, while California (Pa.)'s Rontez Miles was the Defensive Player of the Year.
Both Kennedy and Wild were named to the All-PSAC West First Team earlier this month, with Kennedy also being named the PSAC West's Offensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive season.
Kennedy, who was one of 22 nominees for the Harlon Hill Trophy, had a season to remember for the Lakers in 2011. He set Mercyhurst single-season records for receptions (88), receiving yards (1,389), receiving touchdowns (15), and all-purpose yards (2,232). He held the previous records for receptions (75) and touchdowns (11), which he set during last season PSAC Championship year. His receiving yard number broke Ed Bailey's 11-year record of 1,102, and his all-purpose yardage figure shattered Richard Stokes' record of 1,540 back in 2007. He led the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference in all four of those categories and also led the conference in touchdowns scored by any running back or wide receiver.
Career-wise, Kennedy finished second all-time in receptions with 194 (Ed Bailey had 201) and receiving yards with 2,758 (Bailey had 2,983). He tied Bailey's record with 28 career receiving touchdowns. He also finished second all-time in all-purpose yards with 4,249, but first all-time on a per-game basis, averaging 118 yards over 36 career games.
Meanwhile, Wild missed the final three games of the year due to a shoulder injury, and still led the Lakers with 90 total tackles, recording double-digit stops in six of the eight games he played, including a career-high 16 stops against Edinboro. Wild led the team with a personal-best seven sacks and a career-high five forced fumbles. He also finished second on the team with a personal-best 12.5 tackles for a loss. He finished his career in a tie for eighth place on the all-time tackles list at Mercyhurst with 304.
Wild was also named to the Capital One Academic All-District First Team in early November.
Players selected to the first team will now be placed on the Daktronics, Inc. All-America ballot, while Neugebauer and Miles advance to the national player of the year ballots. All of the results of which will be announced on Tuesday, December 13.
