Final Bracket

ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst College wrestling team hosted the inaugural Laker Open today, Nov.19.  There were 15 different teams that entered the open and a total of 180 wrestlers.   Freshman Kody Young highlighted the Lakers, finishing atop the 133lb class after winning four consecutive matches on the day.

Young registered three consecutive pins before winning a thrilling championship match against Cody Wheeler.  Young's perseverance and aggressive style of play helped him to a 4-3 decision win in the championship bout.

Sophomore Michael Pollard recorded three consecutive pins as well to make the 184lb championship match.  The season falls record holder registered all of his pins under two minutes with his fasted pin coming just 27 seconds into his second match of the afternoon.  Pollard would go on to finish second overall in his class after losing the championship bout to Zach Benzio of Seton Hill, 7-2.

Senior Fred Hale was one-of-three Lakers to make it to the championship match.  On the way, Hale recorded a major decision, fall, and decision respectively.  The Mentor, Ohio native would take silver after dropping the championship bout to Penn State's Jonathan Gingrich.

Sophomore Ryan Bohince and freshman August Mizia both finished the Laker Open in third place.  The 125lb Bohince dropped his first of the match of the day, then wrestled his way through the consolation bracket winning five consecutive matches to take the bronze.  Bohince's loss came against Brockport State's Rocco Rosso in a 2-1 decision, but Bohince would get his revenge beating Rosso in the semi-finals in the consolation bracket, 6-4.

Mizia started his day with a tech fall win over Niagara Community College's Zach Antone.  From there the freshman beat Shane Smith of Millersville, 13-12 before grappling to a fall over Bret Terry of Gannon.  Mizia dropped his fourth match of the day forcing him into the consolation bracket to face off against teammate Richard Dowdley.  Mizia beat the freshman Dowdley in an 11-3 major decision.  In his third place match Mizia pinned Mark Colubucci in 53 seconds to cap off a 5-1 day.

The Lakers are back in action on December 3 when they compete in the Ohio Northern Tournament in Ada, Ohio.
