ERIE, Pa.- Janet Judge, the president of Sports Law Associates LLC, will speak at Mercyhurst College October 30-31. Judge will present three different speeches on campus this weekend.
On Sunday, October 30, Judge will speak on Title IX, a topic Judge is well-versed in. She is considered a national expert on the issue. The speech will begin at 4 p.m. At 7 p.m., Judge will present on social media regarding student-athletes. She has spoken on this subject around the nation. Both of these talks are open to the public free of admission.
On Monday, the 31st, Judge will speak to Mercyhurst coaches on a number of ideas regarding the NCAA.
Judge is president of Sports Law Associates LLC, where she concentrates her practice on intercollegiate sports and employment law counseling. She brings her legal and diverse collegiate athletic experiences to the table when advising and representing colleges and universities on a wide variety of sports-related issues, including strategic program development, NCAA eligibility, infractions and certification, EADA compliance, contracts, pay equity, Title IX, harassment, hazing, academic fraud and athlete misconduct. In addition to her law practice, Ms. Judge is also a NCAA grant speaker and trainer at Division I, II & III colleges and universities and national and regional conferences, including the NCAA, Women's Basketball Coaches Association, American Hockey Coaches Association, Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association; and the Big East, Western Athletic Conference, Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference, America East Athletic Conference, Northern Sun Conference. She has presented at more than 300 colleges and universities educating student-athletes on the risks associated with irresponsible use of social networking, drugs and alcohol use, and behavior akin to hazing. She also runs workshops for staff on similar topics as well as leading discussion around recent developments in sports law. In 2011, the National Association of Women Athletic Administrators (NACWAA) named her Administrator of the Year for Athletic Organizations.
Ms. Judge is a nationally recognized expert in the area of Title IX and was invited to address the Knight Commission on the topic of Gender Equity in Athletics. She is one of the attorneys hired by the NCAA to draft the successful amicus brief for the NCAA in the Davis case. She is the co-author of the recently released NCAA Manual on Title IX, co-authored the NCAA News bi-weekly column “Gender Equity Q & As,” and is on the editorial board of College Athletics and the Law. Ms. Judge's publications include a number of articles and chapters on collegiate compliance, including “Title IX and Athletics” for the College and University Law Manual, (ed., R.W. Iuliano, 2009). She is included in the Best Lawyers in America in the areas of Sports and Employment Law and has been named a SuperLawyer for her Intercollegiate Sports Law work. She recently was invited to present “Advanced Intercollegiate Compliance Issues under Title IX” to the National Association of College and University Attorneys at their national conference in March 2011.
Ms. Judge is a graduate of Harvard/Radcliffe College where she continues to serve on its athletics oversight committee and was a member of its NCAA Division I Athletics Certification Steering Committee. As an undergraduate, she was an eight-time varsity letter winner in soccer (captain, three national tournament appearances), basketball and track & field. After college, she was hired at Harvard as Assistant Director of Athletics and Alumni Relations Office Liaison. While attending Boston University School of Law, she coached intercollegiate basketball and soccer at Simmons. Upon graduation from law school, she clerked for the Honorable Norman H. Stahl, United States Court of Appeals. Ms. Judge is admitted to practice law before state and federal courts in both Maine and Massachusetts.
