Coach Pilson Announces 2011 Captains

ERIE, Pa. – Head coach Cecil C. Pilson of the Mercyhurst College women's lacrosse team announced Wednesday that seniors Kimberly Masterton and Maggie Yackel will serve as captains for the 2011 season.

“After serving as assistant captains last season, the coaching staff and team feel strongly that these two student-athletes have the knowledge and experience needed to fill this leadership role,” said Pilson.  “Both players will provide the strong leadership that is needed in order to be successful on and off the field.”

Masterton, a native of Penfield, N.Y., ranked second in scoring last season, netting a team-high 50 goals and totaling 84 points through 18 games. She also provided the team with 36 ground balls, 26 draw controls and 23 caused turnovers. Following the season she earned several accolades including All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference First Team and Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association All-America honors.

Yackel, a native of Camilus, N.Y., anchored a defense that held opponents to just under nine goals a game (8.72). Through 16 contests, missing two due to injury, she accumulated 36 ground balls and posted 23 caused turnovers, tying her for the team-lead with fellow captain Masterton. Her efforts on the field placed her among the best in Division II lacrosse, as she was named to the All-PSAC First Team and was selected as an IWLCA All-American.

Both players will lead the women's lacrosse team into action this spring, beginning on Mar. 2 when the Lakers face non-conference opponent Limestone in Gaffney, S.C.
